What Are the Correct Rug Sizes for Bedroom Design?
A bedroom rug is an essential piece for your home. It sets the mood for your sleeping quarters. And if your room has hard floors, a rug brings a plush softness which will enhance texture and coziness. However, finding the right rug size for your bedroom is essential.
If you’re in the market for a new rug, chances are you’ve already started debating on the right size, dimensions, and design for your floor space. There are so many directions to head in that it can understandably become overwhelming. Everything from rug placement to the type of rug you’re getting can be confusing at first. Here are our tips on choosing the right rug sizes for bedroom design:
Best Rug Size for King Bed
As a standard rule of thumb, you want the rug size for king bed frames to extend out from the end of your bed by about 24 inches. The standard king bed frame is sized at 76 inches wide, which means the correct rug size for king bed frames is somewhere between 10ft wide and about 8ft long. Since most beds back up against a wall, you’ll only need the additional length space on the footboard — that means a rug of about 8 feet is your best option.
The best rug size for king bed frames is 8x10’
Using an 8x10’ rug size, you should have enough coverage for the front of the bed, nightstands and bedside tables, and whatever furniture accessory you might want at the foot of your bed.
Best Rug Size for Queen Bed
A standard queen size bed has dimensions of 5 feet wide by about 6 feet long. So, when looking for the right rug size for queen bed frames, you’re going to want a rug size that is roughly 6x9’ or 8x10’.
If you’re looking for a rug that will cover the majority of floor space in your room, an 8x10’ rug is the best rug size for queen bed frames. With this larger rug size, your rug will fit comfortably underneath your queen bed with more than two feet of excess space on all three sides of the bed frame. This particular design style works exceptionally well for bedrooms with two nightstands — one on either side of the bed.
Alternatively, if you’re looking for a rug that covers less surface area and leaves more of the natural flooring exposed, a 6x9’ rug is the best rug size for queen bed frames. Rather than placing the rug entirely under the bed frame, you’ll want to place your 6x9’ rug toward the bottom of the bed. This will leave only about 1.5 feet of space on either side of the bed frame, bringing just a subtle touch of extra design and color into the room.

Best Rug Size for Full Bed
Because a standard full size bed frame measures just under 5x7’, a 6x9’ rug size is the best rug size for full bed frames. However, depending on how the furniture in your room is positioned, a 5x7’ rug can also be a good rug size for full bed frames.
The best rug size for full bed frames is 6x9’ or 5x7’
If your bed is in the center of your room
A 6x9’ rug size for full bed frames in the center of the room is the best choice. If a bed is anchored with the headboard against the wall and positioned with equal amount of floor space on all three exposed sides, you’ll want to find a bigger rug size for full bed frames. Positioning your 6x9’ rug slightly in front of the start of the bed frame will allow you to create the recommended two feet of excess rug surface exposed on all three sides of the bed.
If your bed is in the corner of your room
A 5x7’ rug size for full bed frames in the corner of the room is the best choice. If your bed is in the corner of your room instead of the middle, only two sides will be exposed. So, even though it is technically the same dimensions as the bed itself, a 5x7’ rug is still a great rug size for full bed frames. The best way to position this rug size under your full bed is to position it halfway under the length of the bed and slightly in front of the headboard. This will create the two feet of excess rug surface on both exposed sides of the bed that you’re striving for.
Best Rug Size for Twin Bed
Because the standard dimensions of a twin size bed are roughly 3x6’ there are a few options to choose from when finding the best rug size for twin bed frames. For a larger room with a twin bed positioned in the center, a 5x7’ rug will work well. But, for a room with a twin bed positioned in the corner, a 3x5’ rug is a more optimal rug size. Further, if you’re working with only half of the room’s total square footage (for example a dorm room shared with a roommate), a runner rug is actually the best rug size for twin bed frames.

If your twin bed is in the middle of the room
A 5x7’ rug is the best rug size for twin bed frames in the middle of the room. Anything larger runs the risk of making your bed appear smaller than it actually is, thus shrinking the appearance of your bedroom as well. If you position the top of your rug closer to the middle of the bed itself, you’ll be left with a beautiful area rug that fits well under your twin bed and leaves just enough of the rug surface exposed for a tasteful touch of added design.
If your twin bed is in the corner of the room
A 3x5’ rug size is the best rug size for twin bed frames in the corner of the room. If your bed is anchored in the corner of your room, only two sides of it will be left exposed. Because of this, you’ll want a slightly smaller rug that can still extend beyond the bed frame without becoming too big and overwhelming the space. A 3x5’ rug positioned halfway under the bed and slightly in front of the headboard will allow the rug to extend appropriately beyond the footboard and the side of the bed frame.
Best Rug Size for Nursery
Determining the best rug size for nursery rooms depends on how you want the rug to look in the room. The two most common design styles for rugs in a nursery are A) using a rug to cover the entirety of the nursery’s floor space or B) using a rug as a layering piece underneath certain pieces of furniture. However, we also recommend considering a runner rug size for your nursery in certain instances.
The best rug size for nursery rooms depends on the size and style of the room itself
Using a rug to cover the entirety of the floor space
We recommend this particular design style in a nursery that has hardwood floors or scratchy carpet. Covering the floor space with a rug will allow your little one to have a cushiony space to explore as they learn to crawl and eventually walk. When following this design style, the best rug size for nursery rooms depends on the size of the room itself. A good rule of thumb is that you should be able to place your rug underneath the front legs of each piece of furniture (crib, rocking chair, changing table, etc.), leaving about one foot of space between the edges of the rug and the wall.
Using a rug as a layering piece
We recommend choosing this design style for a nursery that already has a soft, cushiony floor but could use an extra pop of design. Layering a smaller area rug under the furniture in your nursery is a great way to add a dynamic design element. This is most commonly done by layering a rug underneath the crib. A standard crib’s dimensions are about 4x2 feet which means the smallest rug size you’d want to layer underneath it is a 3x5 rug. Positioning a 3x5 rug halfway underneath the crib will ensure the rug extends slightly beyond the frame of the bed.
Using a runner rug size for nursery rooms
At Tumble, we’re proud to offer two different sizes in our washable runner rugs: 7 feet and 10 feet long. A runner rug size for nursery rooms is great if you’re looking for a rug to cover just a small portion of the nursery. For example, a runner rug is a great size for placing directly in front of your nursery’s changing table. Not only will a runner rug provide just a subtle pop of design for the room, but it will also allow you to have an extra cushioned surface area to stand on as you get your little one ready throughout the day.
