How to Clean a Rug at Home

How to Clean a Rug at Home

When it comes to maintaining area rugs, the idea of cleaning the rug itself can be incredibly daunting. Different rugs and different materials all require their own unique methods of cleaning — whether that may be dry cleaning only or investing in special products and devices. Following your rug’s recommended method of care is crucial to maintaining the integrity of the rug design itself, but it can be time consuming and headache-inducing.

With this in mind, our experts at Tumble have designed unique rug technology that is not only spillproof but also machine washable. So, gone are the days of stressing over how to clean a rug. Now, it’s as easy as hitting a couple of buttons on your washing machine (and your rug design stays just as beautiful as ever!).

How to Clean a Rug

The first line of defense in every Tumble rug is the unique spillproof rug technology. Tumble spillproof rugs are made of a polyester knit backing and 100% polyester chenille to maintain the soft, cozy feel of a rug. However, this fabric is then coated with a water-based solution that is commonly used in medical and outdoor clothing (so you know it’s legit!) which works to separate the oils, stains, and liquids from the fabric. This spillproof rug technology causes liquids to bead up on the surface rather than absorb into the fabric, leaving behind messy stains. And the best part? This barrier is not visible and cannot be felt, so you don’t have to sacrifice style for spillproof rug functionality!

When designing the Tumble spillproofrug, we made sure to test the spillproof rug technology in accordance with United States Safety Standards and California’s Proposition 65. This requires businesses to provide warnings to Californians about significant exposures to chemicals that cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. At a Consumer Product Safety Commission-approved testing facility, our spillproof rugs have been tested for harmful chemicals which are commonly found in waterproof coatings and in other machine washable rugs. (Spoiler alert: we passed the test and our spillproof rugs are completely safe to bring into your home!)

How to Wash a Rug

Despite our effective spillproof rug technology, we understand that some days you want a deeper clean than just a quick wipe down. For these days, our machine washable rug technology is incredibly helpful. For best results, make sure to have any stains facing outward and place your machine washable rug in any standard sized washing machine. Tumble machine washable rugs should be washed in cold water on a delicate cycle using standard laundry detergent (we recommend that yours doesn’t contain bleach or fabric softener, to preserve the quality and design of your machine washable rug!).

Once the machine washable rug has gone through the wash cycle, you can choose to tumble dry (pun absolutely intended) on low heat or hang it to let the machine washable rug air dry. If you choose to let your Tumble rug air dry, be sure to allow for one to two days before it is fully dry.

*Note: There is no limit to the number of washes that you will get out of your Tumble. However, as with any washable product, excessive washing with harsh detergents may begin to damage the spillproof coating and the polyester fibers which is why we recommend the above method to ensure gentle washing. Additionally, only the Tumble rug is machine washable. The rug pad can instead be cleaned effortlessly with soap and water.
